“An Artist, An Engineer, a Historian, a Geologist and 300 Teachers walk into a bar…”

Please join me, the faculty of five independent schools, and three authoritative voices from outside the traditional mainstream of K-12 education, via Twitter feed for a unique conversation about the direction of learning in the years ahead. Next Monday, August 26, from 10:15-11:45 Pacific Time, more than 300 educators from Alverno High, Mayfield Senior, St. Mark’s, Chandler, and Pasadena Polytechnic schools will join in Pasadena for an interactive conversation.  We will cover subjects including the skills our students need for the future, what college admissions offices are looking for, balancing tradition and innovation, STEM vs STEAM, and more. In the spirit of inter-school networking, I have asked the audience to report and stimulate back-channel questions and discussion via Twitter at #Pasadena13.  We will be projecting the live Twitter stream on the auditorium wall. I know how much I have learned in the last few weeks by remote-ing in to other beginning of the year meetings via Twitter.  Help me with your perspective and I will share your questions and comments. Our remarkable guest panel:

Dr. Lorne M. Buchman, a trained theatre director and scholar, author, and past faculty member at Cal Berkeley, is President of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He has served on over a dozen education and other non-profit boards.

Melany L. Hunt is the Vice Provost Of California Institute of Technology.  She specializes in transport and mechanics in multiphase systems, including granular material flows, dense liquid-solid flows, fluidized beds, powders and porous materials.

Steven S. Koblik, trained as a diplomatic historian, is president of The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. Before coming to The Huntington, he was president of Reed College from 1992 to 2001.

I am the geologist, and have been asked to moderate. Join your California colleagues! Hope to see your name flash up on the live Twitter stream!
